L'algoritmo di controllo dell’autofocus AF e l'ottimizzazione della velocità di comunicazione sono stati sviluppati specificamente per gli obiettivi con innesto X. Oltre a offrire un AF ad alta velocità, l'obiettivo supporta anche la funzione Af-C (AF continuo) e la correzione delle aberrazioni, direttamente in-camera. L’obiettivo è realizzato da 16 elementi in 13 gruppi, con la migliore tecnologia disponibile: tre lenti in vetro Fld, due in vetro Sld, e due lenti asferiche. Questo sistema ottico riduce al minimo le aberrazioni e garantisce un'eccezionale risoluzione a tutte le aperture. Inoltre, la struttura del sistema ottico piega delicatamente la luce per ridurre al minimo il bagliore del coma sagittale e offrire prestazioni ottiche ottimali dal centro della cornice ai bordi. Il risultato è un effetto bokeh morbido e rotondo con ampio volume di luce in tutto il fotogramma. Il rivestimento Super Multi-Layer di Sigma riduce i bagliori e le immagini fantasma per aiutare i fotografi a produrre immagini nitide e ad alto contrasto anche in condizioni di controluce.
